Married to a wealthy Louisiana businessman, Edna already feels alienated from the tight-knit, rambunctious and casually sensual Creole community in which she lives. Familial ties are ruptured on the basest level, but also on a level of maternal guilt. The natural part of you denies it. This stuff was never for her and she tries to escape them. Chopin studies the nature of the woman who must suffer under the wings of a usually nondescript man, not necessarily abused but subdued, and her study of women is unconventional for the time.

For example, they let us know which features and sections are most popular. Calixta and Alcee, from the prior work, are ushered in the same house during a storm and their past tension from the ball culminates finally, six years after meeting. Never would he have gone with her if not for the extreme call of an emergency, a lie, indicative of her melodrama and desperation. The writing was, as I said, beautiful.

We use this information to create a better experience for all users. The Awakening is a story of a woman who feels bound and oppressed by her marriage and by motherhood. Like any other great novelist, Chopin shows herself to be far more interested in asking questions than in generating any definite answers. This stuff was never for her and s I loved this story for the beautiful writing and the intricate way of exploring the life of a tragic woman.

She deals with independence. One hundred years later, the least we can do is give her magnum opus the attention it deserves. At times I felt for this character and at times I was frustrated with her.
